Mountain Railway

With some of the most spectacular views in Scotland looking across the Cairngorms National Park and beyond, it’s no wonder that CairnGorm Mountain is one of the country’s leading visitor attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

With the mountain railway you can even get to the top of the mountain without breaking a sweat.

If walking isn’t your thing then fear not, because you can take the Funicular Mountain Railway, which has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

The mountain railway at CairnGorm Mountain actually offers the highest railway journey in the UK with visitors travelling in safety and comfort on a two kilometre trip from the Base Station at car park level (635m) to the Ptarmigan Top Station, which is 1,097m above sea level and just below the summit of the mountain itself.

Journeys to the top typically take just eight minutes and  friendly staff are on hand and happy to tell you more about the history and geology of the area. Once you get to the top there is more than just great scenery awaiting you too, as the Ptarmigan Station is also home to the mountain exhibition where you can learn more about how nature and the elements have shaped this sub-arctic landscape and how the animals and plants have adapted to survive. The weather watching terrace at the Ptarmigan Top Station is also a feature in its own right exposing visitors to the best and worst of the Scottish mountain weather. It’s not unusual to experience four seasons in one day before retreating for a hot chocolate in the restaurant.

The Funicular Mountain Railway is fully accessible for wheelchair users with lift access to all levels and assistance available from staff if required. During the winter months we suggest wheelchair users check weather and conditions at car park level before visiting. It is open daily throughout the year (except Christmas Day and scheduled maintenance days).

Opening times & prices effective from 1st May 2011

We are open daily from 10am. First train is at 10.20am daily. Trains run every 20 minutes.

Last train up is at 15.20 and last train down 16.00.
