Mountain Management
You might expect a mountain to look after itself, but even wild, windswept places deserve care and attention, and at CairnGorm, this is the responsibility of the CairnGorm Mountain Ranger Service.
Cairngorm Estate measures 1400 hectares (14 square kilometres) and is owned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). All of the estate lies on the Spey side of the catchment boundary, including the ski area, Lurcher’s Gully, the popular climbing locations in Coire an Lochain and Coire an t-Sneachda, and the Laogh corries to the North.
Our neighbours are:
• Forestry Commission Scotland to the North,
• Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to the East,
• Rothiemurchus Estate to the West and
• National Trust for Scotland (Mar Lodge) to the South.
The Cairngorm Estate Management Plan commits HIE to manage the estate responsibly and sustainably. Snow sports and mountain pursuits are supported, as are HIE’s commitments to nature conservation and collaboration with neighbours and communities.
