The best known skiing and snowboarding area in the national park is the Cairn Gorm Mountain itself. It has 30km of ski runs as well as a fully maintained snowboarding park and a fully recognised ski school that caters for everyone from beginners to experts searching for some extra ski lessons. You can learn to ski and snowboard with professional instructors and lessons can be pre-booked with both private and group sessions to choose from. Disability Snowsports UK also offers extra tuition for people with special needs. Snow sports typically take place between December and April with the terrain park kickers and rails, as well as sledging available.
You don’t have to have your own ski or snowboard equipment either, because you can hire everything you need on the mountain itself – including outer clothing. Equipment is paid for when you purchase your ticket at the Base Station ticket office and the only items that cannot be hired on site are hats, gloves and goggles – but these are available at the Shop at the Top.
CairnGorm Mountain is also geographically close to other popular skiing areas including The Lecht and Glenshee. The great thing about all of the skiing facilities in the Cairngorms National Park is that safety is never compromised with patrols in place. For example, there are BASP qualified professionals that are on hand to ensure that there are no problems thanks to their patrol, rescue and first aid service.
All in all, CairnGorm Mountain and the surrounding area is not just a desirable snow sports destination – it should be an essential on every enthusiast’s map.
