Walking Hiking

Cairn Gorm Mountain, the Aviemore area and indeed the Highlands of Scotland in general, are all popular even outside the winter season thanks to the brilliant walking and hiking options in the area.

From car park level at Coire Cas it is possible to walk anywhere on the mountain range. Visitors are advised to pop into the Ranger Base and pick up the most up to date information on weather conditions and walking routes and if you are planning a longer walk you may wish to leave a route card with the Rangers before you set off.  At Coire Cas car park there is a voluntary car parking charge (suggested rate £2 per car). All funds raised from the voluntary scheme are reinvested in the upkeep and maintenance of the walking routes, waymarkers and trails on the Cairngorm Estate.

The Cairngorms Massif is Britain’s largest nature  reserve and is protected under various UK and European Law. Outwith the skiing months it is not possible to use the mountain railway as a quick means of access to the high mountain plateau. The mountain railway operates a visitor management plan to help protect the mountain environment and visitors are asked to play their part in safeguarding this special place for future generations by observing the management arrangements. Click here for full details of the Visitor Management arrangements. Visitors who are booked onto the Walk@TheTop will be accompanied by a guide once they leave the safety of the top station. Visitors who ride the mountain railway but are not booked onto a Walk@The Top must remain within the area of the top station building and weather terrace. Visitors will be reminded of these arrangements when purchasing their train tickets at the ticket office and once again when they ride on the upward journey to the top station.

Bike CairnGorm

Take a journey in to the granite cathedrals of the Cairngorms to experience the best and the worst of the weather that can be found in the Highlands of Scotland.

Funicular Up, Guided Walk Down

When conditions permit (usually May - Oct) visitors may ride the funicular up, then join a guided walk down the mountain. Suitable footwear and clothing advisable. Daily at 13:20. Prices (including funicular day ticket):

Walk up, train down

Let’s be honest – hiking up a mountain can be a fairly exhausting experience. So the last thing you may want after walking to the summit may be to walk all the way down again.

Walks & Trails

From the ‘Walk @ the Top’ to the ‘Train up, Guided Walk Down’, walking at CairnGorm Mountain is one of the most amazing experiences you can enjoy on any holiday in the UK. High mountain trails for the experienced, lower level way marked trails the whole family can enjoy and also a trail suitable for wheelchair and buggy access. It’s all here in the Cairngorms National Park.

Walking holidays are thriving in the Cairngorms National Park with so many excellent trails to check out.

The main way of exploring the ski area on foot is by following the Coire Cas Mountain Trail, a loop trail with wayside information which takes 60 - 90 minutes to complete.  In this time, you will have a good view of the mountain railway and ski tows, the developing mountain woodlands and you will climb to 1000m near the steep head wall of Coire Cas. Shorter loops cut across the corrie to shorten the trail.  Children should be able to manage part or all of this trail, but it is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Simple route plans are available at the Mountain Shop and Ranger Base.
